Virtual and In-Person Stuttering Therapy Programs

Empowering Adult Stuttering Therapy

At The Talking Place we will help...

  • Reduce physical tension and struggle
  • Decrease avoidance of speaking situations
  • Increase confidence in work and social settings
  • Strengthen self-advocacy
  • Build communication participation

The primary goal of speech therapy for adults who stutter is increased participation, reduced avoidance, and greater communication confidence.

Adult Stuttering Intensive (6 Weeks)

6-week Intensive Program

Many adults appreciate structure when beginning therapy. For that reason, I offer an initial 6-week structured therapy phase.

Many adults who come to this program have had speech therapy before. This approach is different than most. It focuses on developing a solid understanding of stuttering and introduces you to the freedom of speaking with spontaneity and choosing to participate in the opportunities you may have been avoiding.

We integrate evidence-based speech-language pathology with strengths-based, solution-focused interactions. Therapy is individualized and based on a clinical evaluation. This program is flexible and effective whether you choose in-person or virtual stuttering therapy.

This service may be a good fit if you:

  • Avoid speaking in certain situations
  • Dread introductions or saying your name
  • Feel tension or physical struggle when speaking
  • Want support navigating workplace communication
  • Have tried therapy in the past and want a different approach

Services are available virtually across Minnesota and Iowa. In-person sessions are available in the greater Minneapolis/St Paul area.

Many adults who enroll in this program have had speech therapy at some point in their lives. For many people, those earlier experiences focused on techniques or tools designed to increase fluency and/or mask stuttering. For some people, traditional therapy has missed the mark by offering a one-dimensional one-size-fits-all approach which did not sufficiently address other important aspects of living with stuttering such as participation, avoidance, confidence, and navigating real-life speaking situations.

This program takes a broader approach. In addition to exploring ways to reduce physical struggle in speech, we also focus on areas that are often overlooked in traditional therapy, including:

  • Understanding the brain-based nature of stuttering
  • Reducing avoidance of speaking situations
  • Increasing participation at work, socially, and in everyday life
  • Developing intentional and flexible communication strategies
  • Building confidence and self-advocacy
  • Science-backed behavior change techniques
  • Creating a personalized plan for continued growth

For many adults, this combination of education, practical tools, and real-world application makes therapy feel different from what they may have experienced in the past.

Whether you are returning to therapy after many years or exploring it for the first time as an adult, the goal is the same: helping you communicate in ways that feel more comfortable, confident, and aligned with who you are.

This Adult Stuttering Intensive includes six individual speech therapy sessions focused on:

1. Understanding stuttering & reducing shame

2. Reducing tension and physical struggle

3. Goal setting and maximizing progress

4. Identifying and addressing avoidance

5. Building communication confidence

6. Developing a personalized long-term plan

Completing the full 6-week phase is recommended because structured, consistent therapy tends to produce better outcomes. However, services are always individualized and voluntary.

Many participants do choose to extend their learning and support with individual therapy sessions. Your therapist will discuss this and other appropriate options with you at the end of your program.

The Adult Stuttering Intensive is structured but not binding. After completion, you may choose to continue individual therapy, join a therapy group, or discontinue services.

Your plan is collaborative and individualized.

You may:

· Continue individual therapy

· Join an adult therapy group

· Schedule periodic follow-up sessions

· Pause services

There is no requirement to continue. The goal is to support autonomy and meaningful participation.

If medically necessary and covered by your plan, individual therapy sessions may be billed to insurance. Insurance does not reimburse for “packages,” but rather for individual therapy sessions, which is why you will be billed for one session at a time, after the session has occurred. Coverage varies by plan and is not guaranteed.

We are in network with some insurance companies. Some insurance plans cover group speech therapy; others do not. Coverage depends on your specific plan. We recommend verifying coverage with your insurer.

Both research and our own experience has shown that stuttering therapy for adults is as effective when delivered online as it is when delivered in person.

The Talking Place currently offers teletherapy statewide in:

  • Minnesota
  • Iowa

No. Stuttering is a neurodevelopmental difference, and no therapy can guarantee fluency. The six-week intensive structure provides a focused foundation for reducing avoidance, increasing participation, and developing communication confidence. Your outcome is highly dependent on your personalized goals. Progress differs for each individual.

We offer the 6-week intensive program, individual stuttering therapy, and group stuttering therapy. In addition, we can help you connect with a variety of community, conversation, and support group opportunities for adults who stutter, both local to the Twin Cities area and virtual options across the United States.

Many adults who seek stuttering therapy hope to feel more confident and less fearful when speaking. It’s common to dread introductions, hold back in meetings, or feel anxious about presentations and public speaking. As a professional who stutters, you may feel passed over for opportunities that other people enjoy. In your personal life, you may feel like stuttering has changed your personality. These experiences can make it harder to participate fully in life.

In therapy, we focus on the situations that matter most to you. Together, we work on reducing avoidance, building confidence, and developing strategies that help you communicate more comfortably in both everyday conversations and higher-pressure speaking situations.

While therapy does not eliminate every challenge, many adults find that with the right support they are able to participate more freely and feel more confident when they speak.

That’s completely understandable. Many adults feel uncertain before starting. The evaluation process is an opportunity to discuss goals, concerns, and whether this approach feels like a good fit.
